For many years, it has been observed that ram surfaces in low earth orbit exhibit a visible luminescence. Such glows have been detected during flights of the Atmospheric Explorer (AE) satellite and the Space Shuttle. In addition, ground-based laboratory experiments have reproduced visible glow using high-speed, rarefied flows. Pictured here is an example of glow on the Space Shuttle.
